Deacon Mark  G. Jenkins Sr.

 

¶Mark Gregory Jenkins Sr. was born on August 5th, 1964 to Joanette Jenkins and Douglass Hill in Mt. Holly, NJ. He was called to be with the Lord on Thursday December 31st, 2020.  Mark was a great-grandson of the founder and first Pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church, the late Rev. Wesley L. and Annie Mae Gregory. He spent his youth being brought up in the church and at a young age he dedicated his life to God and was baptized joining the Tabernacle Baptist Church family.

¶As an only child, Mark loved to spend time out and about with his many Jones Avenue friends, as well as his cousins, when allowed. While enjoying his time as a child, his athletic ability was apparent as he excelled in multiple sports including football, basketball, track, and baseball. He was always the best at baseball and he loved being able to play the sport even into his adult years. He was always looking to join a softball team to play. He never skipped an opportunity to show off his skills on the basketball court and his love for football was as strong as ever.

¶Mark was educated in the Burlington City school system and graduated from Burlington City High School in 1982. He went on to continue his education at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. As a proud Scarlet Knight, he enjoyed his time at Rutgers University and graduated in 1988 earning his Bachelor of Science degree in Statistics.

¶It was during this time spent at Rutgers University where he would meet and fall for the love of his life, Charlene Harris.  This relationship continued to bloom as they decided to start their family together. Mark and Charlene were married on November 29th, 1991. Out of this union, they had 4 children. Kyle, Mark Jr., Deylan, and Isaiah.

¶Mark began his career at USA Environmental in April of 2002. He diligently worked there serving as an Environmental Manager. His impact and contributions there were constantly felt and appreciated by his co-workers.

​

¶He was always somewhere to be found working at Tabernacle and he held a plethora of different positions and roles. He was a proud member of the Van Ministry and could be seen on weekends driving the church vans taking the members of Tabernacle to and from the church. He also worked security for the church, and was in charge of opening and operating the basketball gym. It was here he was able to reconnect with the youth in the community and some of those he had coached while younger. He also displayed his talents being part of the Tabernacle Players, as he enjoyed putting on performances alongside his church family. He thoroughly looked forward to teaching Sunday School class to the nursery children each Sunday.

¶The love and respect he garnered from those among his Tabernacle family could always be felt. He chose to further his dedication to his Lord God and was ordained as a Deacon on February 23rd, 2003. He faithfully served in his role and was eventually elected to be Chairman of the Deacon Board in 2016. He served for two full years in his role handing over his duties in 2018.

​

¶He never lost his love for sports. When his children became of age to participate, he was right there to not only root them on but chose to coach them as well. He became the baseball, softball, and football coach for all 4 of his children’s teams, making sure none of his children were left out.  His love for coaching unsurprisingly didn’t stop once all his children were older and no longer playing youth sports. He continued to coach for years and shared his love and knowledge of the game with countless teams. He took on the mantle and responsibility of head coach with his only interest being his love for developing and working with children. All his efforts over the years were rewarded in 2013 when he was able to achieve one of his proudest moments. He led his 125 lb. team to a South Jersey Youth Championship, while coaching alongside his son Mark Jr. who was the coordinator.

​

¶His pure heart and goodness was instantly noticed by any child who he came around. They were all drawn to his wonderful smile and attempts to make them laugh. In his spare time, he loved playing word games and watching any crime show on TV he could find. He was always rooting for his teams and could be found wearing something in support of his beloved Philadelphia 76ers, New York Yankees, and San Francisco 49ers. He departed this life surrounded by his loving family. His suffering on this earth was over and it was time for this angel to be with his heavenly Father.

​

¶Mark is survived by his wife, Charlene Harris-Jenkins; children: Kyle Harris-Jenkins, Mark Jenkins Jr., Deylan Jenkins, and Isaiah Jenkins (Shetara), mother, Joanette Jenkins; father, Douglass Hill (Jackie); mother-in-law, Vivian Harris.  sister-in-laws: Michelle Harris, Cassandra Harris, Nicole Harris and Keisha Harris-Stokes (Babatunde), aunt, Leonella James (Archie) cousins: Roxanne Harris, Paula Williams (Derek), Marvin Ferguson (Angela), Stacy Sprowl (Gregory), Anthony Charlie Ferguson, Michelle Robin Jefferson, Archie James Jr., Lynn Ferguson, and Sean James (Camisha).  Godchildren, Hunter Wilson and Kimaya Walls. Along with many other nieces and nephews; family and friends.
