Obituary

George E. Taliaferro

"The life of the dead is placed in the memory of the living"

George E. Taliaferro died peacefully at the Masonic Village in Burlington, NJ on January 21, 2021 at the age of 91.

George was born on May 1, 1929 in Hockley, VA. He graduated from Plainview High School in 1950 and joined the United States Air Force for what would become a 27 year career; rising to the rank of Senior Master Sergeant.  He was initially stationed in San Antonio, TX, then moved on to Greenland, England, and Libya.  He met Mary Miller and they wed in 1957 and moved to New Hampshire.  It was there that the young couple welcomed their two children.  With a young family in tow, he was then stationed in Bermuda and then back to Hampton, VA.  After a few years he was sent off to Thailand, in Southeast Asia, and upon his return the family went to England for four years.  After England the family spent a year in Texas before settling in Browns Mills, NJ - but George remained in motion.  He was next stationed to the Azores, an island region of Portugal, then again, finally, in Hampton, VA.  In 1977, he retired from the military to Browns Mills and began a part time career with Acme supermarkets.  Finally, after 13 years with Acme, he retired from professional work...but that only freed him up for “personal” work; grandchildren, church, and his honey-do list.

George is survived by his wife, Mary Taliaferro, his son Zachary Taliaferro, his daughter Vanessa Taliaferro-Jones, his granddaughter Tyler Jones, grandson Nile Jones, and son-in-law Arnaldo Jones. He is also survived by three sisters, Margaret Hoffman, Gloria Lumford, and Plunard Robinson (Mason), and sisters-in-law Maudestein (John Jr.) and Amy (Ellis).  George is preceded in death by his parents John Sr. and Mozelle Taliaferro, and his siblings John Taliaferro Jr., Estelle Taliaferro, Ellis Taliaferro, Lenora Baptist-Small, and James Taliaferro.  His youngest brother, Ivory Taliaferro (Nora), followed him in death two days later.

George was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and his passing is merely a transition to his heavenly home. He began his spiritual journey in the congregation of First Baptist Church in Hockley, VA and continued his witness throughout his life.  For over four decades he was a member of Second Baptist Church in Mount Holly, NJ.  He adored his church family and served the congregation as an usher and Sunday School teacher.

George had a vast extended family of siblings, nieces and nephews, and cousins.  Also a large circle of friends and associates; many of those friendships are decades old.  He was a patient advisor and thoughtful mentor.  He was generous with his kindness, and with his resources.  He was beloved by all and will be profoundly missed.  We are grateful to have had him in our lives.  The impact of his life will resonate throughout our family for generations.
